When I wrote the article “Filipina Dating Sites-Do they Create a Healthy Filipina image?” I asked 8 simple questions of the original poster on The Filipina Images article “Filtering Dating Site ads”. I had hoped the owner of Akojo Filipina dating website would come to The Fil-Am Forum Report and state his case. Well He did. Read it here.
During some back and forth in the comments section I got a little distracted from the original eight questions asked. These questions were:
-
How does commercialization of Filipinas promote a healthy image of Filipinas?
-
Are you saying that by pasting their pictures all over the Internet will help them realize their full potential as a true Filipina?
-
Does meeting a Foreigner help them realize their true essence, or potential, as a Filipina?
-
Wouldn’t their full potential be realized by meeting the right man for them? A man who loves, honors and respects them regardless of the nationality?
-
How does this help them realize their full potential by meeting only foreign men?
-
Does meeting a foreigner on dating sites help raise their status in society?
-
Are you saying this is the only available source of E-commerce this family could participate in?
-
I simply ask you how does your commercialization of Filipinas help their image?
After reading his replies over and over again I admit I was still stumped. Why hadn’t he answered my questions? Why is he trying to redirect the attention from him to the Filipina Womens Network and their documentary and fund raiser “Usaping Puki”? A Filipina Version of “The Vagina Monologues”
Why was this so important to him?
I soon realized he’s using some good mis-information tactics and that’s ok! I like the challenge. But I wanted was some answers my self! These answers were for the eight questions listed above. I soon realized that in his replies he had embedded the answer to most of my questions in just one simple paragraph.
“My thoughts, but not my conclusions on the question are these: Maybe they actually find Caucasian men very attractive, maybe they feel that if they find real true love with a foreign man, they can migrate to a country where they can earn ten-fold, twenty-fold, even thirty-fold what they are earning now, if gainfully employed in the same area of expertise. That would amount to ‘Escaping the socio-economic climate in the Philippines’ and migrating to a country which offers more potential and greater renumeration, recognition and reward for their achievement.”
There you have it. It’s only about the money and green card. Only once in this 94 word statement was love mentioned. Nowhere in this 94 word statement was family mentioned. Nowhere in the 94 word statement was commitment mentioned. This statement, if read by the wrong man, would think “Green Card” seeker and “Gold Digger.”
My Question remains….how does this elevated the image of Filipinas? Sadly, for so many people this IS the image and stereotype of a Filipina and exactly what Filipina Images is fighting. Does this also suggest that the only way a Filipina can meet a foreigner is through a dating site?
Just begin to imagine for the next few minutes…a man, we’ll call him Steve, Steve is sitting at his computer and he’s just joined AkoJo, Cherry Blossoms, or Filipina Heart. While he’s searching the profiles when he starts to get instant messages from the Filipina members. Many of them are beautiful of course and they, instead of putting their best foot forward, just come right out and tell him directly…
“Listen Steve I’m well educated and want to come to America to realize my full potential in my career. I might grow to love you but I can’t promise. But if you will give me the opportunity to escape my socio-economic climate here I’ll do the best I can. How ’bout it Steve?”
What do you think Steve will begin to think every time he’s approached like this? He might say to himself “If that’s the way the game is played then I will find the prettiest Filipina I can for a trophy wife…well at least for the time being. Until she leaves me. But until then I’ll have fun.” This has just created the “shopping” mentality on the Steve’s part and last but not least….reduced the Filipina to a commodity that will go to the highest bidder!
How would this enhance the Filipina Image? Do tell.

I believe that bloggers have the right to exclude advertisements on their site from anyone they choose. I compare it to having a store and having a sign up that says “We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone”. I own a little restaurant in the province and I have exercised that right 2 times in the last month. For example, we had an Englishman, who after being told that we don’t have ashtrays because we don’t allow smoking inside decided to light up anyways. We told him to leave and not come back until he could observe the rules. He hasn’t been back yet. Anyone that knows me knows that I “smoke like a late freight”, yet even I want a non smoking environment for my family and my customers.
On the subject of the value of Filipina Dating sites, anyone who knows who I am and of a site I created as a spoof of dating sites knows my opinion of them.
Almost very day I have a Filipina come in the restaurant to use a computer wanting to sign up for Cheeryblossoms, Filipinaheart, or some other site. I sit them down and talk to them about the pitfalls of these sites. First, they will be a “needle in a haystack”, and secondly I tell them if they are truly looking for a mate that they need to make their profile interesting. I also tell them to make a blog somewhere where they can express themselves and find someone who is interested in them for who they are as a person, not just a pretty face. Lastly, I tell them that love should be the reason that they seek a mate, not a green card or money. We have a forum we are developing and we have a place on that forum for people to meet each other if they so choose, but we will rule with an iron fist and delete spammers and freaks.
Chris,
I was wondering when you would pop back in here..thanks for your comments.
As for Blog owners chosing advertising and the like. We, just like forum admins and owners, have the right to approve then publish whatever comes our way. Noemi of the Filipina Images Blog chose not to post Alan’s comments and I back them up 100%. It’s their blog they can do what they want.
It’s cool what your doing when you talk to these girls about the dating sites. I’m sure they think they know what they’re doing but at least they have someone who’s practical to advise them.
By the way a friend of mine was in Dumaguete and Siquijor recently. He didnt’tell me he was going so I couldn’t recommend your resto because I don’t know where on the island you are. So email me and let me know he’s also thinking of spending a great deal of time there to paint. He’s an artist..and says Siquijor is paradise.
I guess he never heard of the flying witches and cigars smoking ghost waiting to ambush him from the trees. LOL
one thing I will say for the people on my site Don is this: they are actually real, they don’t hide behnind any proxy server, like you do; they publish a little about themselves, post a pic or two; what about you Don? Who are you? Where do you live? Where are you coming from? I pretty much hung it all out here, how about you coming out into the open, I read your about link, thats not too much help lang… perhaps your alter ego Lloyd could shed some light on the situation; my friend, ooops, sorry… forgot lang…
Alan,
I can assure you and all my readers one thing….
Lloyd is his own person and not my alter ego. I’ve got enough readers in here, he’s one of them, to comment when it’s appropriate. I don’t talk to myself. LOL
Now lets get back to you,Alan, this response surprised me just a little. Some folks told me you would never respond and I was beginning to beleive them.
One way your response doesn’t surprise me is how you turn the attention off of the subject matter, you and dating sites, and try to put it on me.
Why don’t you answer my question Alan. I’ve given you fair opportunity to air your grievances…I’ve posted all of your comments…even made one of them an article. I did that because until now I assumed you were somewhat logical. Please don’t let me down Alan.
My questions Alan…remember them?
As for proxy servers and such well to be frank with you I don’t even know what that is. And don’t see how that’s pertinent to the questions at hand.
Do you really think I’m judging you Alan? Thanks for giving me so much power. Now let’s be factual here…If I were capable of judging…I would also be capable of dispensing some sort of punishment for whomever I was judging. But I am unable to do so… and I think that’s a good thing coz I’m sure I’d screw it up!
So let’s call it admonishment…that’s a bit more suitable. Don’t you think?
By the way Alan…If you think your posters are totally on the up and up “real people” as you call them I’ve got news for you…dating sites from all countries are full of people ready willing and able to hide behind the internet and take advantage of others. You’re foolish if you think otherwise.
Thanks for calling me an “enigma” wow I’ll have to let that sink in some…I think I’ll change the name of the forum to enigma forum report.
What do ya’ think?
I am happy to attempt to answer your questions Don, but I am a little pressed for time at present. Here are my thoughts on question 1 on your list.
Wondering what headline you will dream up next - LOL
1… How does commercialization of Filipinas promote a healthy image of Filipinas?
Definition of commercialization:
1. to make commercial in character, methods, or spirit.
2. to emphasize the profitable aspects of, esp. at the expense of quality: to commercialize one’s artistic talent.
3. to offer for sale; make available as a commodity.
It depends largely on the motive of the club or association. If the motive is to PROFIT from matching Filipina to foreign nationals then it would be determined to be a commercial entity profiting by exploiting the economic hardship of the Filipina. (Motive and Fee)
Scenario 1 The Healthy Image…
An online employment agency would assist members to prepare a resume’ or profile complete with personal description, photo, skill assessment and work experience, they may even charge a Fee; but because their ‘Motive’ is employment, the ‘Image’ is deemed to be healthy.
Scenario 2 The Un-Healthy Image … A ‘Pay-To-Contact site’ similarly would assist the members to prepare a profile complete with personal description, photo, interests, and educational skills, work experience; their ‘objective’ being to match women for marriage to foreign nationals either on a mail-order basis or through personal introduction for a FEE. Then the ‘motive’ is clearly to profit and the ‘image’ is deemed to be an un-healthy image.
Scenario 3 The Unclear Image … A free ‘information-sharing-forum’ The ‘Objective’ of the forum being to discuss all topics relative to living and retiring in the Philippines, marriage, divorce, pre-nuptial agreements, property acquisition, hotel accommodation, travel deals, and other information material that could be calculated to promote the matching Filipina to foreign nationals, providing a wealth of information a foreign national would need to know, equipping and enabling him to come to the Philippines and meet, date, court, marry a Filipina. The forum does not charge a ‘Fee’ but they do ‘Profit’ by being agents for real-estate businesses, florist businesses, book sales, guided tours, and hotel and flight bookings, money transfers, investigative services etc…
Is this scenario a Healthy image or an Un-Healthy Image? You decide!
Alan
KASALANAN nyong mga Pilipina!!Kayo MISMO ang NAGDIDILIG sa BASA nyong mga IMAHE.Of course, bec. of MAL-OBSERVATION,it does NOT occur to the typikal pinay na sya MISMO ang SUMISIRA ng kanyang imahe.
